High-Dose LSD Shows Stronger Relief From Depression Than Lower Doses

LSD THERAPY

A recent study from the University of Basel in Switzerland reveals that high-dose LSD paired with professional therapy provides significantly greater reductions in depression symptoms compared to low-dose treatments. Conducted with 61 participants facing moderate-to-severe depression, the double-blind trial measured the impact of two therapeutic LSD sessions over a 12-week period.

Participants were split into two groups: one received two doses of 100 and 200 micrograms, and the other received two sessions of just 25 micrograms. Depression symptoms were evaluated at baseline, then again at two, six, and twelve weeks after treatment. The results showed that the high-dose group consistently reported deeper and more lasting improvements in mood and wellbeing.

Therapists noted that high-dose sessions often triggered profound emotional and psychological breakthroughs—potentially linked to mystical-like experiences known to support long-term mental health gains. These transformative moments are believed to foster neuroplastic changes, helping the brain form new patterns and thought structures that counter persistent negative states.

Although high-dose LSD requires longer sessions and careful guidance, the study emphasizes its safety when administered under clinical conditions. No serious adverse events were reported, and the effects remained steady through the three-month follow-up.

The findings build on decades of psychedelic research and align with past studies using psilocybin and MDMA for depression, PTSD, and anxiety. They suggest: the intensity of the psychedelic experience matters, and more robust, high-dose therapy may yield more sustained mental health gains than microdosing or low-dose approaches.

Researchers are now calling for larger Phase 3 clinical trials to confirm these findings. Meanwhile, the U.S. FDA has granted breakthrough status to similar LSD-based treatments for anxiety, indicating growing recognition of psychedelics as legitimate medical interventions.

As mental health issues continue to surge globally, high-dose LSD-assisted therapy stands out as a promising new direction—offering hope to patients resistant to conventional treatments.
