Federal Study Finds Men Prefer Smoking Marijuana, While Women Lean Toward Edibles and Topicals

Marijuana Trends

A new federal study highlights key gender differences in how Americans consume cannabis. According to data released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), men are more likely to smoke marijuana, while women tend to prefer edibles, beverages, and topical cannabis products like lotions.

The findings are based on results from the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, which surveyed tens of thousands of adults across the U.S. The survey found that men are significantly more likely to choose flower and inhaled cannabis methods, such as joints, pipes, and vapes. In contrast, women were more likely to report using infused edibles, THC-infused drinks, and cannabis creams or balms.

Researchers suggest the trend may reflect differences in product preferences, social expectations, and reasons for cannabis use. While men often use cannabis for recreational and euphoric effects, women are more likely to use it for relaxation, sleep, anxiety, or pain relief—conditions where slow-release edibles or non-intoxicating topicals can be effective.

The study also noted that women were more cautious about dosage and often preferred products with lower THC concentrations. Additionally, many female respondents cited discretion and health concerns—such as avoiding smoke inhalation—as major factors in choosing edibles and topicals over smoking.

This data could reshape how cannabis companies approach product development and marketing. As more women become regular cannabis consumers, brands may look to expand their edible, wellness, and beauty product lines to reflect shifting preferences.

Overall, the report paints a picture of a diversifying cannabis marketplace where personalization, safety, and comfort are increasingly important—especially for female consumers.
