Grassroots Power: Texas Activists Fight for Marijuana Decriminalization in Kyle

Texas Activists Fight for Marijuana

Texas is heating up in the fight for cannabis reform! Ground Game Texas is rallying support to bring marijuana decriminalization to the fast-growing city of Kyle. As local efforts continue to gain momentum across the state, this movement shows the true power of people coming together to demand smart, compassionate cannabis laws.

Texas Takes Another Stand: Kyle Joins the Movement

Texas activists aren’t slowing down—and the next city in their sights is Kyle. On April 7, 2025, Ground Game Texas officially launched a campaign to get a marijuana decriminalization initiative on Kyle’s November ballot.

The goal? To stop the criminalization of people for possessing small amounts of cannabis. At this early stage, Ground Game Texas is finalizing the ballot language and working to raise $50,000 to support the campaign. Once finalized, they’ll need about 3,000 signatures to get the initiative in front of voters.

This comes after successful campaigns in major cities like Austin, San Marcos, and Killeen, where voters chose to decriminalize cannabis—despite pushback from state officials.

Key Campaign Highlights:

  • Ballot Initiative: Focused on stopping arrests and citations for low-level cannabis possession.
  • Funding Goal: $50,000 for outreach, petition drives, and local organizers.
  • Signature Collection: 3,000 needed to qualify for the 2025 ballot.
  • Population Growth: Kyle has exploded from 5,000 residents to over 60,000 in just two decades.

Executive Director Catina Voellinger said Kyle’s young, diverse population is “ready for change that centers their needs: ending low-level cannabis enforcement that’s been used to punish working-class people for too long.”

Fighting Back Against State Opposition

Not everyone is cheering for local reform. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has aggressively fought against city-level marijuana decriminalization efforts, filing lawsuits in cities like Austin, San Marcos, Killeen, Elgin, and Denton.

However, activists have scored important wins. Earlier this year, a judge ruled that Dallas could continue implementing its cannabis decriminalization policy, denying Paxton’s request to temporarily block it. The legal battle isn’t over, but courts have shown growing support for local voters’ rights.

Kyle’s campaign will likely face similar challenges—but if recent history is any guide, the people have a strong chance of winning.

Why Local Cannabis Reform Matters

Cannabis reform at the city level can have massive impacts even without state-wide legalization. Studies show that criminal penalties for small amounts of marijuana disproportionately harm minority and low-income communities. Arrests can mean lost jobs, broken families, and lifelong barriers to success—all over a small amount of plant material.

Decriminalization saves taxpayer money, reduces the strain on police and courts, and helps build safer, healthier communities.

Most importantly, it reflects modern values: that responsible adult cannabis use should not be treated like a crime.

At High Science, we see this movement as critical to shaping a future where plant-based wellness is embraced, not punished.

The Bigger Picture: Cannabis Culture is Evolving

The work being done in Kyle and across Texas is part of a much larger shift in how society views cannabis. As legalization spreads across the U.S., more people recognize the plant’s medical benefits, its role in wellness, and the harms of outdated prohibition policies.

Organizations like Ground Game Texas are pushing boundaries, igniting change, and giving voters the power to create more compassionate, informed communities.

At High Science, we believe that cannabis reform is about much more than laws—it’s about education, acceptance, and creating a culture of honesty and empowerment around natural medicine.

We stand proudly with the activists, voters, and communities working to change the system, one city at a time.

Kyle, Texas is the latest city stepping up to say “enough” to outdated cannabis laws. With the power of grassroots activism, local voters are reclaiming their right to a smarter, safer future. High Science is proud to champion the movement toward plant-based healing, personal freedom, and honest conversation. The future of cannabis is bright—and it’s being written by everyday people taking a stand for change.
